Abstract [en]
Background: Discharge can be a vulnerable situation for the elderly patient. In connection with discharge, changes in the life situation can occur where patients are faced with several difficult choices and decisions. Previous research shows that patients experienced anxiety during discharge, and Nurses experience that under a high workload, patients do not always receive help in preparing for discharge and lack of time is a major problem when it comes to discharge.
Aim: To describe patients' experience of discharge from somatic inpatient ward.
Method: The chosen method was a literature study based on the analysis of qualitative scientific articles.
Results: The results showed that the elderly patient had varied experience about their discharge. Some elderly patient experienced that they were not involved in the discharge process. The information was perceived to be deficient and difficult to understand, which led to a feeling of insecurity. Others experience participation and that they have been listened to. The needs of the patients also varied. Some needed representatives while others wanted to participate actively.
Conclusion: The conclusion of the results highlights the person-centered care that is important for the patient to have their needs met. Nurses need to improve their attitude and think more personcentered towards the elderly patient in the discharge process.
