Newly graduated nurses’ experiences of work-related stress (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Newly graduated nurses are faced with demanding challenges at work, which can cause mental and physical strain. As a result, newly graduated nurses are hesitant about their ability to remain in the nursing profession, due to the high intensity of work-related stress.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe newly graduated nurses' experiences of work-related stress.

Method: This literature study is based on nine qualitative scientific articles that have been analyzed through Friberg´s five-step model.

Results: Two main themes and six sub themes emerged. The main factors in the emergence of work-related stress were high workload and uncertainty about the new role. One of the most common experiences was feeling unprepared and not having sufficient skills to meet the requirements. Newly graduated nurses experienced difficulties with the transition from student to nurse. Fears of making mistakes during patient care and the perceived hierarchy at work were also factors to the newly graduated nurses experiencing work-related stress. The result presented two themes: A stressful work environment and Being new to the profession.

Conclusion: Newly graduated nurses experience stress due to a limited work environment and other factors that negatively affect work-related stress. To minimize these problems, the workload and work environment must change, by ensuring that the requirements are met with the resources. Hopefully, a smaller workload will promote better relations between colleagues.
