Nurses' experiences of work related stress : A literature-based study (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Stress often occurs when environmental stresses exceed an individual's ability to cope. The nursing profession is a stressful profession, so it is common for nurses to have experience of work-related stress in their daily work. The nurse is responsible for providing safe, high-quality care. Prolonged work-related stress can affect both the nurse's health, private life and have a negative impact on the quality of care

Aim: The purpose of this literature-based study was to describe nurses' experiences of work-related stress.

Method: A literature-based study based on ten qualitative articles. The analysis was prepared according to Friberg's analysis model. Results: The results showed three themes and seven subthemes. Themes were: "the external challenge of the nurse", "Demanding work situation" and "The nurse's management strategies for work-related stress".

Conclusion: The conclusion that can be drawn is that nurses experience stress at work due to the high workload, lack of resources, relationships and cooperation difficulties as well as lack of support from the managers at work. This affected the nurse's physical and mental health as well as privacy. The result also reports the employer's responsibility to actively work for and prevent the occurrence of work-related stress.
