Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Work motivation is a wide concept that is different for all individuals and can be categorized in intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors. Retail is a complicated industry which is characterized by uncomfortable working hours, low salaries and fast-paced environment. Previous research has investigated experiences from employees in retail about work motivation in other countries and we found that research in this area is limited. The purpose of this qualitative study is to get an employees’ perspective about work motivation. We want to investigate which factors some employees in retail experience as important to keep them motivated to keep doing a good job and how they experience feedback from the closest leader impacting their motivation. The sample consists of employees that have had this as their primary employment and worked at least six years in retail. Based on Herzberg’s two-factor theory and Self-Determination Theory (SDT) an interview guide was utilized as a tool during the semi-structured interview. A thematic analysis was used to present the results of the study in three main themes: relations in the working group, the importance of tasks and opportunities to development and the leaders' impact of motivation. The results of this study show that those factors that were most important for the employees are the intrinsic motivational factors, which is consistent with the previously mentioned theories.
