Abstract [en]

Background: When the pandemic came, the care was unprepared, to prevent infection, many guidelines were changed and thus also the working method. The municipal home care is performed 24 hours a day, all year round. More and more patients are choosing to die in their own homes and palliative care is being expanded in all regions. Important cornerstones in palliative care are: knowledge, wholeness, empathy and closeness. Person-centered care inpalliative care aims for the individual to be co-determining and involved in their care in order to be able to live as good a life as possible.

Aim: Was to describe the nurses’ experiences to meet palliative care patients and their relatives during Covid-19 pandemic.

Method: A qualitative interview study. Ten semi-structured interviews with nurses.  A qualitative content analysis method with inductive approach was applied for the analysis.

Results: The results identified four main categories and 12 subcategories. The main categories were presented as: The feeling of distance - the informants were described under this category of distancing and how the protective equipment affected the work. Fear of infection - the fear of spreading the infection was raised by informants and also that the nurses felt that patients and relatives had a fear of becoming infected. The feeling of insecurity during the pandemic - guidelines were constantly changing and the nurses experienced an insecurity. Management was important for the nurses to feel safe, Create comfort- The nurses highlighted comfort as a large part of palliative care, both for the patient and the nurse. It was created using several different strategies such as continuity, information, support from colleagues and ethical conversations.

Conclusion: Covid-19 has had a major impact on nursing work. Constant changes have created uncertainty for both nurses and patients. Lack of protective equipment has contributed to stress and insecurity. A functioning care environment with a clear and supportive management is necessary to be able to provide good person-centered care.
