Nurses experiences of triage at the emergency department : from a nursing-perspective (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: The workload has increased at the Emergency departments during the last few years. To meet patient’s medical needs, a prioritization system called triage is used. Triage involves making a assessment of patient’s medical health, which place great demands on nurse’s medical competence. Nurses also has a responsibility for patient’s nursing during the triage.

Aim: The aim of this study is to shed light on nurse’s experience of taking responsibility of nursing during the triage.

Method: A literature-based study based on qualitative research. Eight articles were analyzed according to Friberg's (2022) five steps model.

Results: The result present in three main themes, competence to work with triage which highlighted nurses experience of the need for competence to make assessment of patients individual nursing and medical needs. Nurses also needed to strength their competence trough training where simulation was away to clarify the nursing perspective. The theme organization during triage describes that nurse’s experience the physical work environment affected the conditions for talking undisturbed with patients. They also expressed that lack of clear guidelines made nursing more difficult. The last theme experiences of a lack work environment contained experiences of the high patient flow, the low stuffing and interruptions contributed the lack of nursing. The nurses also described the importance of collegial collaboration as a prerequisite for taking responsibility for nursing during the triage.

Conclusion: When nurses take responsibility for the six core competencies, the nurse's responsibility strengthens for nursing during the triage.
