Meeting women exposed to violence : the nurse's experiences. (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Intimate partner violence against women is a global public health and can be hard to identify exposed women. The signs of intimate partner violence can appear in different ways. The nurses have an important role in identifying exposed women, because they are often the first the women come in contact with. The nurse's attitude and knowledge are a big factor when it comes to identifying these women. 

Aim: The aim of this study was to illustrate the nurse’s experience of meeting women who are exposed to intimate partner violence. 

Method: A literature-based study with focus on qualitative design based on 10 scientific articles. All articles have been analyzed by using the five steps model by Friberg (2022). 

Results: The results of this study have formed two main themes and five subthemes. The main themes are called: To be affected by internal factors and to be affected by external factors in care meetings. The subthemes are called: To be affected by your emotions, dare to get close, an obstructive work environment, to feel unprepared and the barrier between the nurse and the abused woman.

Conclusion: The result of this study shows that meeting a woman who is exposed to intimate partner violence is complicated. The nurse’s experience in this study shows that there is a lack of knowledge. They need more guidelines, knowledge, and support to feel more self-assured. Furthermore, the nurse’s experiences that their own feelings affect how they work with the women.
