Animated elements for exploration and navigation in educational VR: A Mixed Method Study

Abstract [en]

Interaction design faces a new challenge when it comes to exploration and navigation in educational VR as the 3D experience concerns an entire world rather than a single interface on a screen. Visually aiding the user in an open environment without the guiding cue in question becoming unnatural or hard to see is easier said than done. By using knowledge from interaction design, visual perception, and previous research, this study has focused on investigating three animated elements – namely the arrow, the text, and the swarm – and how they can support the user as they explore an open environment in VR. The research question was – how does the user perceive animated cues in an educational VR experience? – and to answer this, the study used a mixed method approach. A digital questionnaire was distributed that yielded 38 responses, and a user test with 3 participants was held concerning the WELD-VR environment. In the digital questionnaire, the result showed that motion was a defining attribute that made an element particularly interesting. Furthermore, out of the elements showcased, the swarm was the most popular one. The result for the user test showed that the opinions were mixed concerning the animated elements, but they still found their exploration supported by the elements’ existence. The study concluded that it has provided a small puzzle piece when it comes to exploration and navigation in educational VR, especially considering how transferring results between a 2D experience and a 3D experience may be difficult.
