Factors that influenced adolescents’ mental health under Covid-19 : An interview study with school nurses (English)
Abstract [sv]
Smittspridningsåtgärder vidtogs i hela världen i olika omfattning.
Abstract [en]
Background At the end of 2019 a new coronavirus was discovered in China and in march 2020 WHO declared that the spread of Covid-19 was a pandemic. All over the world measurements to contain the spread of infection were implemented. Sweden had comparably few restrictions but during periods there was distant learning and a general advice to keep distance and minimize social contacts. Mental health problems were a growing problem among adolescents already before the pandemic. Research shows that the pandemic had a negative effect on adolescents’mental health. The school nurse has a unique position close to the adolescents during their whole schooltime and meets all students for health conversation.
Aim The aim of this study was to describe school nurses’ experiences of factors influencing adolescents’ mental health during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Method Qualitative method with an inductive approach was used. Data collection was made by semistructured interviews of six school nurses. The material was analyzed according to qualitative content analysis.
Results The analysis resulted in three categories: Changed teaching and school environment, Less social contacts and Difficulties maintaining healthy habits. Some of the factors affecting the mental health of adolescents were distant learning, homesituation, cancelled activities and less physical activity.
Conclusion Adolescents that already were fragile or exposed were more vulnerable during the pandemic. This thesis shows the importance of taking measures to promote learning and feeling of connection as well as maintaining healthy habits to protect adolescents’ mental health during pandemics or similar situations.
