Feedability study of stainless-steel wires for arc welding processes

Abstract [en]

To develop stainless steel wires for using as welding wire in GMAW process, some primary investigations are needed, such as an investigation of the wire feedability. In this thesis, five different stainless-steel wires were supplied by a company interested in having them used in wire arc additive manufacture using GMAW as heat and material feeding source. For compassion, two different conventional wires were selected based on AWS standards to use as benchmarks. Some characteristics of wire, which can affect feedability, were measured and assessed, namely, Cast, Helix, wire diameter tolerance, wire hardness, wire roughness and deviation of wire tip from the wire centerline. They were investigated in this work to assess the potentiality of these wires for GMAW applications. The Company's wires characteristics were in conformity with acceptance criteria from AWS and ISO standards. Therefore, the Company's wires are potentially usable for GMAW.
