Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome experiences of treatment by healthcare professionals (English)
Abstract [en]
Background Polycystic ovary syndrome is one of the most common endocrine disorders in the female population. The prevalence is about 10%. Common symptoms are menstrual disorders, increased levels of testosterone, involuntary infertility, decreased metabolism, and increased body hair which leads to suffering for the women.
Aim The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences women with diagnosed polycystic ovarian syndrome have from health care professionals and the consequences of this.
Method Literature study of qualitative original articles, published between 2011 and 2021. The study was based on 11 articles from the databases CinAhl and Pubmed.
Results From the analyzed interview material two themes with each three sub themes emerged. The two main themes where; Barriers for professional treatment and Experience of not being seen. The majority of the women experienced a lack of treatment mostly caused by lack of knowledge, information and support by the health care professionals. Women that experienced a holistic perspective from health care professionals felt involved in their care and experienced a higher quality of life.
Conclusion An increased knowledge of the diagnosis and that women with PCOS are seen from a holistic perspective is a prerequisite for being able to respond to these women in the future. The majority of the women experienced a lack of treatment and this led to consequences not only for these women but also for society.
