Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Previous research has shown a connection between personality theory and mental illness in the form of eating disorder problems. In this study, with a total of 76 participants, a dispatchof questionnaires was produced which was initially two separate. One concerned the five-factor theory and the other concerned internal and external factors and the perception of its impact on the possible development of an eating disorder. Then, a correlation analysis was performed to examine whether personality dimensions covaried with the perception of whether internal or external factors affect the development of an eating disorder. Finally, regression analysis was performed to investigate whether personality dimensions could predict perception of what influences the development of eating disorders. The results show that the personality dimension Agreeableness can predict the perception that eating disorders depend more on external than internal factors. Conscientiousness also shows a correlationwith the perception that eating disorders depend more on external than internal factors. Also Agreeableness correlated with the belief that eating disorders depend more on external than internal factors. According to the results, there is a correlation between the personality dimension Neuroticism and the perception that internal factors have a high impact on the development of eating disorders. Neuroticism also predicted the notion that eating disorders are due to internal factors. Previous studies show a link between a high estimate of the Neuroticism dimension and the probability of developing eating disorders. It is interesting that the high estimate of Neuroticism also proves to predict the perception that internal factors have a high impact. One possible interpretation may be that people with traits of Neuroticism, and thus tendencies to experience negative emotions, also attribute internal factors to other people's suffering and problems.
