Nurses' experiences of patient safety in the event of handover in a hospital ward. (English)
Abstract [en]

Background One of the most critical aspects of healthcare is to maximize the patient’s safety. This is something that a practicing nurse comes across in numerous ways every day. The backbones of a functioning healthcare system are structured reports and good communication. In order to optimize the process of handover there are various aids and structures to follow in order to ensure that the right information is passed on in an efficient manner to guarantee patient safety.

Aim The purpose of this study is to investigate the nurses' experiences of working patient-safe regarding handover when changing shifts in a hospital ward.

Method The study is prepared as a literature-based study. The method is based on analysis of qualitative research and intends to form a compilation that can be used as a guide when it comes to nursing.

Results The results are presented in three main themes; The importance of good communication which describes the structure and level of knowledge affecting the handover. The importance of teamwork for good nursing which describes the cooperation and commitment in the handover. Factors that negatively affect the communication which describes the work environment, workload and too little time in a handover.

Conclusion The handover takes place frequently in the workplace, to minimize risk and increase efficiency it is important to work with a clear structure to avoid missing important information. Collaborating promotes patient safety.
