Realism and tactility in stop motion & 3D-CGI : A comparative quantitative survey (English)
Abstract [en]

For a long time stop motion has been an established form of animation, but animation in Hollywood has been dominated by computer 3D animation (or 3D CGI) in recent years. These two forms of animation have very different pipelines, which ultimately gives different results. Despite that they have certain similarities. By studying previous research in the field of animation we aimed to determine how stop motion and 3D CGI intersect, how they are represented as individual forms, and how the filmmakers achieve successful results in each animation type through this. Additionally, we did our own quantitative research in the form of an online survey, in which the participants gave their evaluation of the general believability in both forms, determined from a number of categories.

Our survey and research determine that stop motion has the ability to give the impression of an underlying tactillity that 3D CGI does not possess, but can replicate with varying degrees of success. Several of our participants also noted that 3D CGI is relatively limitless in what can be achieved due to being completely digital and unbound from the constraints of the physical world. Finally, we examine how stop motion and 3D CGI can complement each other to enrich the future growth for both forms of animation, achieve a higher quality of organic animation and tactility which will lay the groundwork for effective storytelling. Both stop motion and 3D CGI have the same potential to tell a compelling story and based on the results of our survey, their degree of believability scores similarly between the categories: Material, Animation, Lighting, Scenography, and Camera
