”Now you lead through a filter” : How new virtual leaders experience leadership in a digital workplace (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in the year 2020, national Swedish guidelines launched recommendations about remote working, which meant that a lot of workplaces that previously were set in physical offices had to swiftly convert into digital workplaces. This in turn led to a situation where leaders, who previously were unaccustomed to being e-leaders, had to readjust into becoming virtual leaders. The aim of the study was to create a deeper understanding of how previously unaccustomed e-leaders experience the transition into leading digital workplaces and how they have handled the e-leader role. The study that was conducted was a qualitative study that was based on nine semi structured interviews with leaders in organizations that due to the national guidelines went from being physical to digital workplaces.

The results showed that leaders experienced challenges with lack of personal connections with employees and limitations in their leadership. The benefits with remote working according to leaders were increased efficacy and some professional development. Leaders chose to handle the role of being an e-leader with increasing the amount of check-in meetings, encourage social interactions and adjust leadership styles to employees.

The study contributes with a deeper understanding of how leading a digital workplace is experienced by previously unaccustomed e-leaders. These insights can be of value as a basis for competenc
