Women's experiences of living with cervix cancer (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Each year cervix cancer affects 500 women annually in Sweden. The most common symptoms are vaginal bleeding and thin discharge. Cervical cancer is treated with surgery which may also be followed by radiotherapy and / or chemotherapy depending on the stage of the tumor. Previous research showed that women experienced mental and physical problems in connection with illness.

Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate women's experiences of living with cervix cancer.

Method: The method used for the study was a literature-based study based on qualitative research.Nine scientific studies with qualitative methods were analyzed to create a literature study.

Results: Two themes and six subthemes were created. The most important themes are life changingand support. The results describe the women's experiences of cervix cancer and their feelings when the illness was given, as well as the importance of needing support. The information about the disease had a significant impact on the women, it provoked many emotional reactions such as worry, anxiety, helplessness and hopelessness, which affected their body but also their lives in general which lead to suffering.

Conclusion: It is of great importance that nurses have knowledge about women's experiences of cervix cancer in order to be able to provide good nursing care. Relatives need to be more involved in the care of women with cervix cancer to produce more knowledge and understanding of the women's condition.
