Effective digital leadership : Leaders' stories (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study examined digital leaders' experiences in relation to the concept of effectiveness. The purpose of the study was to increase the understanding of (the digital) leaders' experiences of a digital leadership and its effectiveness with the question: How is digital leadership exercised effectively according to the leaders' experiences? The study was conducted through a qualitative method with a constructivist approach via eight semi-structured interviews of digital leaders who lead completely remotely either due to the nature of their work or due to the pandemic. The theoretical framework revolves around effective leadership which, among other things, includes leadership styles such as transformative leadership and situation-based leadership. The empiric data is presented on the basis of three main themes: 1. Aspects within leadership, 2. Effectiveness and 3. Relationships. The analysis has identified a number of leadership aspects that are important for performing effective digital leadership. These are: situation adaptation, communication, encouragement, empathy, relationship building and self-efficacy. The main conclusion from this study is that there is no intrinsic difference between traditional and digital leadership. The same aspects are important for leadership to be effective with the difference that these must be adapted to the digital context which in itself is a challenge.
