Women's experiences of long term birth injuries and their need for support : A literature study (English)
Abstract [en]
Background
Childbirth should be the happiest and most exciting event in a woman's life. Injuries may occur that can have both physical and psychological consequences which effects the body negatively and causes both pain and suffering. Injuries that lasts longer than six months are defined as long-term childbirth injuries. This study focused on the following injuries: rupture, vaginal prolapse, urine- and anal incontinence. Previous research highlights the lack of knowledge linked to the woman's physical and psychological health postpartum.
Aim
The aim of this study was to describe woman's experiences and their need of support in long-term childbirth injuries.
Method
A literature study was performed, 11 qualitative articles were chosen and analysed for the result.
Results
The result of this study highlighted women's needs of support and experiences of long term childbirths injuries. Three main themes emerged: Changed lifestyle, Intimate relationship, Care and support. Changed lifestyle describes the consequences in the woman's body and her daily life. Intimate relationship describes woman's sexual health and her relation to her partner. Care and support describe the healthcare professionals lack of care for these women and theirneed for treatment and care.
Conclusion
Long-term injuries include both physical and psychological consequences that affect the woman's health and quality of life. This study also showed inadequate healthcare and support for these women.
