Påverkan av New Public Management (NPM) har resulterat i att den professionella identiteten för lärarkåren har blivit förändrad. Vissa forskare menar att NPM har underminerat lärarnas autonomi i sin yrkesroll och att lärarna har gått miste om sin status i det omgivande samhället. Läraryrket har historiskt betraktats som ett professionellt yrke där det krävs en gedigen kunskap men med påverkan av NPM i skolan finns det indikationer som pekar på en allt större avprofessionalisering av lärarkåren. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur NPM har påverkat gymnasielärares profession och arbetssituation. Semistrukturerade intervjuer har genomfört med sju gymnasielärare på fyra olika skolor. Sammanfattande resultat och slutsatser är att lärarrollen har förändrats som en konsekvens av NPM. Lärarna behöver lägga mer tid på administrativa arbetsuppgifter på bekostad av tid till undervisning. Respondenterna beskriveren mer vinstdrivande strategi där elever och föräldrar ses som kunder till skolan och att nya arbetsuppgifter i form av marknadsföring och service har tilldelats lärarna. Det finns också tendenser till att vetenskaplig ämneskunskap värderas allt mindre och att ekonomisk vinning är det som anses vara viktigare att mäta. Slutsatserna är att forskarna och författarna är tämligen eniga i att lärarkåren har inlett en avprofessionalisering. 

The influence of New Public Management (NPM) has resulted in a change in the professional identity of the teaching staff. Some researchers believe that NPM has undermined teachers'autonomy in their professional role and that teachers have lost their status in the surrounding society. The teaching profession has historically been considered a professional profession where solid knowledge is required, but with the influence of NPM in school, there are indications that there is an increasing de-professionalization of the teaching staff. The purpose of this study is to investigate how NPM has affected high school teachers' profession and work situation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven upper secondary schoolteachers at four different schools. Summary results and conclusions are that the teacher role has changed as a consequence of NPM. Teachers need to spend more time on administrative tasks at the expense of teaching time. The respondents describe a more profitable strategy where students and parents are seen as customers of the school and that new tasks in the form of marketing and service have been assigned to the teachers. There are also tendencies that scientific subject knowledge is valued less and that economic gain is what is considered more important to measure. The researchers and authors are fairly in agreement that the teaching staff has initiated a deprofessionalisation.
