Background: In year 2010 SBAR was introduced/presented for the first time as a communication tool which generates a fast informational exchange and unified communication model between employees in the Swedish healthcare. SBAR stands for Situation, Background, Assessment and Recommendation. Several reports from supervising authorities show that there are deficiencies in the transmission of information which results in an increase of reported suffering caused by care. Research also shows that deficiencies in communication leads to medical error including inaccurate or missed medication, lack of identification band and absent patient information. Currently there is no standard communication tool even though reporting patients is a part of nurses everyday work. Aim: To highlight the effects of implementing SBAR in relation to the nurse's nursing responsibility Method: Literature review based on the content of three mixed method articles, five quantitative and two qualitative studies was conducted. The articles were analyzed according to Friberg´s (2017) three step model. Results The results showthat the effects of SBAR contribute to improved communication within the care team and improve patient safety. In addition, the work environment is affected in a positive direction as well as collaboration in teams. Conclusion: When the nurse uses SBAR for over-reporting, it helps to strengthen the nurse´s conditions for taking responsibility and core competencies.
