Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Studies show that a lack of interprofessional communication (IC) is a leading cause of patient-related accidents. Therefore, functional IC can be considered to constitute the foundational goal of healthcare; to ensure patients safety. Several studies focus on doctors and nurses’ perceptions of the subject. Meanwhile, little to no studies focus on the perceptions of nurse-assistants. This study aims to contribute to the field by exploring perceptions of IC by nurse-assistants in intensive care units and operation units. To answer the questions of the study, six semi-structured interviews were conducted with nurse- assistants from intensive care- and operating units. Collected data was recorded, transcribed, and analysed through a thematic analysis. Key findings of the study were that nurse assistants viewed clarity as central for effective IC. Hierarchy, personality and timing were viewed as central aspects that influenced IC. The findings were discussed and contextualised by prior studies and theories on the field. In the discussion we argue about three central factors of IC: communication, work climate and hierarchy/status.
