You get so nervous you can hardly speak : second language-students experience of the standardised test in Swedish part B (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The national test is a compulsory test that all students take in compulsory school inthe third, the sixth and the ninth grade. The tests taken in the third grade refer to the subject’smathematics, Swedish and Swedish as a second language. In this essay, we will focus on the national test in Swedish subtest B. Research shows that many students are anxious and nervous before the tests, and experience negative stress and anxiety about having to remain in the third grade. Both students' socio-economic background and school segregation affect the study results. In this essay, we will mostly focus on the physical stress and the anxiety that students feel before exams, as studies show that it is this stress that children between 9 and 11 years feel most - the anxiety about not passing the exam.

Aim: The aim of this thesis is to investigate how bilingual students experiences the national test in Swedish subtest B, and what impact the socio-economic background has on the students' education.

Method: The thesis consists of a qualitative interview study where 8 students in the fourth gradehave been interviewed about their experience of the national tests. The interviews are semi-structured and are recorded with audio recording.

Results: All students say that they experience stress before the national exams. Many of the students talk about butterflies in their stomachs and nervousness, some even talk about headaches in connection with the tests. Some of the students experienced national tests as a test with Highstakes, which would affect their future, both in the school situation but also in working life. Difficult words and sentences were another thing that was highlighted by the students. Some students felt that the words were difficult to understand and that the text was difficult to understand - this caused more stress.
