Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The teaching profession has major challenges with a high workload and sick leave, which has made it more difficult to attract people to the profession, as well as retain active teachers. It is therefore of great importance to highlight the teachers' experiences of their work. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine primary school teachers' experiences of their work situation concerning their professional role. Furthermore, factors that are important for the intention to stay or leave the workplace were examined. The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews in which nine informants from three different schools participated. A thematic analysis was used as analysis method and resulted in five main themes with associated sub-themes. The results of the study showed that high workload, lack of time, and lack of preconditions increased primary school teachers' intention to leave. In addition, the solidarity among colleagues, the relationship with the students, and commitment to the profession were important for the primary school teachers' intention to stay. It can be interpreted that the intention to leave was affected by the external conditions that were out of control for the primary school teachers. The intention to stay was instead affected by an inner motivation that arose through support and relationships.
