To take the first steps out as a licensed nurse. New graduate nurses’ experiences of starting to work : A literature review on newly graduated nurses' experiences of starting work (English)
Abstract [en]

Background- Various studies showed that many newly graduated nurses felt overwhelmed when they started working and that many nurses became exhausted during the first years of the profession. We have seen that there is a lack of nurses in the hospitals even though several are examined each year. There is a big responsibility that the nurse must handle. And there are many expectations on them now that they are going to be in charge of nursing. The importance of a thorough introduction is important to get into the profession in a good way.

Aim – The purpose of this study is to shed light on the experiences of newly graduated nurses in starting work.

Method - A literature-based study based on qualitative research to gain a deeper understanding of the phenomenon. Ten articles were analyzed and resulted in three themes and six sub-themes. Articles was analyzed by using the five-step method of Friberg (2017).

Results - Three main themes were created from the analysis, to enter the profession, not being able to have control, the response from colleagues. These themes emerged from six subtemes: concern about nursing responsibility, to be a leader, to lack experience, the impact of the workinvorement, to feel safe in the group, exclusion,

Conclusion –. Newly graduated nurses experienced negative treatment by their colleagues. The support and sense of belonging in the group was important. The lack of experience made newly graduated nurses feel scared and anxious about entering the profession.
