Nurses' experience of stress during the Covid-19 pandemic : A qualitative study aimed at assistant nurses who work in elderly care (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

A pandemic caused by a newly discovered virus, Covid-19, spread around the world starting in early 2020, affecting humans on a global level. The purpose of the study is to investigate the assistant nurses' subjective experience of stress in elderly care in connection with a sudden change that Covid-19 has brought about. The framework and context for the study consists of how the assistant nurses' work situation in elderly care, both in the home care service and in nursing homes, has changed during the Covid-19 pandemic. The study is based on a qualitative approach that, via semi-structured interviews, examines the assistant nurses' experiences of working in elderly care during the pandemic. For analysis of the collected material, the tool thematic analysis was chosen. The results of the study showed that there were four areas that caused stress in the assistant nurses. These areas were protective equipment, staff shortages, work schedules and fear of becoming infected. Regarding the protective equipment, the assistant nurses felt that more elements had been added to keep up with, despite the fact that their schedule had not been adapted accordingly. Increased sick leaves caused staff shortages, which made the assistant nurses stressed because they experienced a lack of time in connection with increased workload. They also experienced stress around becoming infected, which they pointed out is that they do not want to infect their loved ones or care takers.
