Abstract [en]

Sustainability has increased in popularity during the last years, yet the social side of the concept has been neglected by companies due to its limiting ways of measuring. Nonetheless, the United Nations created measurable sustainability goals where multinational corporations play a role in achieving them. This research consequently aimed to study the impact that Western multinational corporations are making indeveloping countries on Sustainable Development Goal 5: to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment. Through qualitative research, leaders and employees within multinational corporations provided insight in women’s empowerment within their company, allowing further development to achieve the purpose of the study. Through the data gathered, it showed that there was a lot of unawareness on women’s empowerment within the multinational corporations and its leaders and employees. Limited impact on Sustainable Development Goal 5 is achieved by multinational corporations, where more can be done. To provide clearer instructions on identifying where multinational corporations currently are and how they can improve their impact on women’s empowerment, a new model was created. The model was based on Terpstra-Tong’s (2017) theoretical framework, but also provides guidance on how to reach the commitment stage in women’s empowerment. By following the model, multinational corporations are able to continuously positively impact Sustainable Development Goal 5.
