Abstract [en]
The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of how the Swedish media portrays gang crime. From a social constructivist perspective, I have analyzed material from two Swedish newspapers, Expressen and Aftonbladet. The framing theory has been used in the study to analyze how articles from the newspapers presented the problem from the political, cultural and economic perspectives, also how it presented reasons and solutions to gang crime. The study is a qualitative study and the method used is content analysis. Results showed that the media presentation from the political perspectives was about migration, segregation and weak criminal policy, the cultural presentation was about family-based criminal networks, class differences and unemployment and the economic presentation was about uneven economic distribution and that large resources are needed to resist gang crime. The study can be used in research that is related to criminal policy and gang crime, materials that have been analyzed are available in the various journals, which makes the study credible. This study can provide a better understanding of how the media portrays gang crime and what image it gives to the people in society. This study can be interesting because nowadays the media has a great influence in people's lives and in Sweden people vote for which party will govern, so this study which will be about how the media presents the gang crime will give a broader understanding for political actors.
