Women’s experiences of miscarriage (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Every fourth woman will experience a miscarriage and it is defined by symptoms such as heavy bleeding with lumps and abdominal pain. A crisis can occur due to traumatic experiences. Suffering can emerge and appear with symptoms as pain and torment. It is important for nurses to show respect and empathy towards these patients who are suffering a miscarriage.

Aim: The aim of this study was to illuminate women’s experiences of miscarriage.

Method: A literature-based study in which qualitative articles were analysed. Systematic searches were performed in the databases Cinahl and PubMed. Articles about women´s experiences of miscarriage were included. The study was based on 10 articles.

Results: The results showed that the women were unprepared for what was to come next, due to lack of information, and did not receive any follow-up after the care visit. They needed support to manage their loss with the help of the health care system and social networks, but they also found their way forward, themselves.

Conclusion: This study highlights the problems for women going through a miscarriage. The experience of a shortage of follow-up, the lack of information from healthcare and the need for more support. Thru this study, it is demonstrated that additional knowledge is needed for nurses to provide good care for women who undergo a miscarriage.
