Abstract [en]

Performance-based self-esteem is when the individual bases their value on what they do and perform, which is an important risk factor for mental illness. Such an aspect of self-esteem maybe related to the individual's personality traits. A quantitative study has been conducted where the aim was to investigate which personality traits in the five-factor model correlate and predict performance-based self-esteem. A web-based survey was conducted in which a total of 149 people participated. Of the participants, N = 95 (63.8%) were women and N = 54 (36.2%) menaged 20–71. When analyzing the data, a Pearson´s correlation analysis was performed to examine whether there was any connection between personality traits extraversion, neuroticism, openness, kindness and conscientiousness and performance-based self-esteem. A multiple linear regression analysis was performed to examine whether any of the personality traits predict performance-based self-esteem. The results show that neuroticism was the only personality trait that correlated and predicted performance-based self-esteem. A person who rates high on neuroticism also rates high on performance-based self-esteem. Personality trait neuroticism can predict performance-based self-esteem. As previous research in this area has not been found, this study has contributed with knowledge about what correlates and predicts PBS.
