Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The social insurance report (2020: 8) of the Swedish Social Insurance Agency shows that stress-related mental illness has increased in recent years. In particular, exhaustion disorder is highlighted as frequent in employees on long-term sick leave.
The purpose of this qualitative study is to, first, investigate the perception of Human Resource (HR) professionals regarding exhaustion disorder and, second, to describe how HR professionals handle the work with the employees that have been diagnosed with this disorder.
Our study includes semi-structured interviews with 12 respondents that are all HR professionals in the public sector in different Swedish municipalities. The majority of the respondents in this study were women with several years of experience with work in the rehabilitation area. In this study, thematic analysis was used.
The results showed that HR professionals perceived that, although exhaustion disorder could be attributed to wide variety of causes, mainly factors specific to each individual accounted for their diagnosis. In the second part of the thematic analyzes, we find that social support as well as clearly defined work rules and expectations, were identified as particularly important factors for how HR professionals handled their work.
Taken together, our study identifies social support as important both for HR professionals as well for the employees that had been diagnosed with exhaustion disorder.
