Attitudes about suicide among professionals in psychiatric care (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The stigma surrounding both suicide and mental illness sometimes means that suicidal people avoid seeking the care that they need. Patients have experienced professionalsas contributing to the stigma and professionals themselves do not always realize this. Research shows that there is an increased risk of suicide after discharge from psychiatric inpatient care. The attitudes of professionals and their approach to suicidal patients can affect a health-promoting relationship with the patients and the effectiveness of suicide prevention, thus, it can be crucial to the patient process to recovery.

Aim: This study aimed to compile existing research that shed light on attitudes about suicide among professionals in psychiatric care.

Method: The study was conducted as a literature review according to a three-stage model. Five scientific articles were reviewed.

Result: The result showed that attitudes about suicide among psychiatric professionals were leaning towards a negative direction and there was a connection between attitudes and education. There was also a great need and demand for specific education on suicide among professionals. The cultural context and organizational conditions within the workplace, such as routines, supervision and support, affected how the attitudes of the professionals appearedand their perceived ability to deal with, and manage suicidal patients.

Conclusion: Attitudes about suicide among professionals was shown to lean towards a negative direction. Education and organizational conditions were factors that affected the attitudes of the professionals. A combination of adequate education, supervision and support can promote more of a positive attitude among professionals towards suicide and suicidal patients.
