Persons' experiences of returning to work after a stroke (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Stroke is the third most common cause of death in Sweden and it is a collective name for diseases that cause oxygen deficiency in the brain and lead to lasting complications. The complications can be physical, mental and emotional and usually it has a major impact on the ability to perform a job. Many actors are involved in the processes of return to work.

Aim: The aim of this study was to illuminate persons' experiences of returning to work after a stroke.

Method: A method to contribute to evidence-based nursing based on analysis of qualitative research was performed to get a better understanding of persons' experiences.

Results: The results of the analysis are three categories: Need of fellowship with others, difficulties with starting work again and facilitating factors.

Conclusion: A successfully return process can be created when the healthcare system works together with other relevant authorities and employers with an individual based working system based on the individual's unique problems. The motivation to return to work was created by getting back to normal and therefore it was important to move forward and through, so they don't get stuck in the process. Contact with others in similar situations is desired, preferably in therapy groups which is organized by the health service. In this situation, it was important that health care don't compare people's abilities and deselect people who started working.
