Patients' experiences of lifestyle changes and self-care in diabetes type 2 (English)
Abstract [en]

Bakgrund: Type 2 diabetes [DT2] is a fast increasing disease in both Sweden and the world. It is a progressive disease that eventually develops into insulin resistance unless healthier lifestyle habits begin to take place. Healthy lifestyle changes, good health literacy and selfcare in connection with good motivation are an important part of the treatment to promote health and prevent complications related to type 2 diabetes.

Aim: The aim of the study was to describe patient experiences of lifestyle changes and selfcare in patients' with DT2.

Method: A qualitative literature study with ten scientific studies was analyzed and compiled to a new result.

Results: The result revealed three themes and seven subthemes. The themes were: To change habits, to accept the treatment and support from healthcare professionals and close relatives. Subthemes were; motivation and adaption, hindrance, mental stress, distrust and lack of acceptance, increased knowledge promotes own responsibility, less worry and more hope and irritation and dissatisfaction.

Conclusion: The study showed different experiences of lifestyle changes and self-care in patients with DT2. Both relatives and health care professionals have an important role to play in treating the patient's self-care and lifestyle changes. Motivation and knowledge of the disease creates good conditions for patients to experience good health.
