Abstract [en]

This study will address the use of semiotic functions and stereotypes when creating appealing character design in the Disney animated feature film Robin Hood (1973). Appeal is what makes the character enjoyable to look at, but it focuses predominantly on the expressive movement and the acting of the character. By increasing the use of symbolism in visual character design, the audience can have an aesthetic experience and interact intelligently by receiving coded messages, therefore having a more emotional understanding of narrative depth. Human's perceive their surrounding by linking mannerism and character with physical appearance. Their own former experiences establish this, both on an individual level and on a collective level in norms and stereotypes.

All visual storytelling fragments combined influence the perception of the audience, creating a flow of information decoded by the audience. This study will, therefore, illustrate by character analysis of individual characters in the film Robin Hood (1973) how meaning is created and how meaning is communicated. By using the most fundamental unit in semiotics as the connection between visual signs and symbolic meaning, this study will show how Disney utilizes this representation in the creation of appealing character design in the animated film Robin Hood (1973).
