Abstract [en]

Background: Myocardial infarction is the most common individual cause of death in Sweden where the underlying coronary artery disease is also a common disease in all the western world. In 2018 there were approximately 24 800 cases of emergency myocardial infarctions in Sweden. The same year there were also 5800 cases of people that died where myocardial infarction was a contributing or underlying cause of death.

Aim: The purpose of the study was to examine patient's experiences regarding the effect myocardial infarction has on the daily life.

Method: A qualitative method was used with a focus on the patient's experience. Eleven articles were selected which was related to the purpose of this study, and these were analyzed using Fribergs (2012) five step model.

Results: Through the analysis three themes and nine sub-themes were developed. The themes were: An emotional roller coaster, Changes in everyday life and To deal with their new life situation.

Conclusion: To survive a myocardial infarction means a life change, both in positive and negative aspects. Therefore, it is important that the nurse is aware of the physical and psychological effects the patients can experience after the acute illness.
