A narrative study on out of home placed youth's development conditions : focusing on turning points, future believes and identity development (English)
Abstract [en]

Today, there is little research on placed young people's own experiences of their development conditions, even though out of home placements are something that costs society a lot of resources and which in research have shown poor results. In the field of children and youth science, it is clear that children and young people need to be heard more, which has become even more relevant in the social work field with children and young people since the Children's Convention ratified as a law in Sweden this year. In this study, five placed in out of home care, or previously placed in out of home care adolescents and young adults between 16-26 years were interviewed about their experiences before, during and after placement. The focus during the interviews has been on turning points and future beliefs, which have had a clear link to the narrative tools used as an analytical method. Theories of identity development and risk-resilience have been used to analyze the development conditions. The result showed that relationships with parents and peers had a major impact on these young people and that despite difficult experiences in life, there was an optimistic future belief in which there was a connection to their own achievements.
