Abstract [en]

This qualitative case study aims to explore the situation of the asylum-seeking women during their asylum process. The focus will mainly be on how they perceive the long waiting time and what effect it has on their health. The asylum-seeking women that are included in this research live at the asylum accommodation at Restad Gård. The research is based on Antonovsky's Sense of Coherence theoretical framework, through his theory the experiences of the asylum seeking women will be examined in relation to comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness.

This is an explanatory research study that aims to explore the effects that the asylum process has on asylum-seeking women. According to previous studies, asylum-seeking women undergo mental distress because of lack of occupation in their daily lives as well as lack of support. The research design used in this research is a single-case study and with ten asylum seeking women situated at Restad Gård. The method used to gather the data is semi-structured interviews.

Results from the research indicates that all asylum-seekers lacks information about the asylum process which is the reason why many feel like the system does not make sense to them. This also make it difficult for the asylum-seeking women to manage during the waiting period, many suffer both mentally and physically, majority of women mentioned that they suffer from mental distress and insomnia. Even though it is hard to find meaning under circumstances like this, some women find meaning through the common ties among each other at the asylum accommodation.
