Who follows the restrictions? How personality predicts social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In March 2020, it was declared by the WHO that the world was facing a pandemic. In order to slow the spread of COVID-19, people are expected to follow the restrictions imposed by governments. The purpose of the study is to gain insight into the personality traits that predict social distance. Data were collected from a Swedish sample (N = 566) with a web-based survey. A total of 429 women (75.8%) and 137 men (24.2%) participated. Using Mini-IPIP6, personality factors in the Big Five and Honesty-Humility were measured and through Dark Triad Dirty Dozen we measured personality factors in the Dark Triad. Through bivariate correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis, we found significant relationships between personality traits and social distancing. Above all, the results show that Dark Triad (r = -.33) and Honesty-Humility (r = .30), but also conscientiousness (r = .18), extraversion (r = -.16), and agreeableness (r = .17 ) are the strongest predictors. Differences in personality are therefore believed to have an importance on how to engage in precautionary measures and thus limit the spread of infection.
