Abstract [en]
The 131 days that followed after the election is the longest period in Sweden without forming a new government. This period highlighted the inherent tension among liberal editors. The aim of this thesis is to delineate and compare how two Swedish liberal newspapers, Dagens Nyheter (DN) and Göteborgs-Posten (GP), represents this turbulent period in the editorial sections. In order to conduct our research, we analysed articles from the editorial sections with an own constructed analytical framework. During the research we identified three time periods that are characterized by the three phases of cultural shock described in the theory of Winkelman. Within these time periods we analysed three questions that we based on the "What's the Problem Represented to be?" approach by Bacchi. The analysis will show that both newspapers acted according to Winkelman's theory with a varying degree. In the reaction period both newspapers show disappointment and frustration but identifies different problems and causes. Both newspapers show a positive attitude in the reorientation period, they both presents solutions on how to maximize the liberal impact, however the solutions differ. In the adaptation period both editorial sections are adjusting to the new reality, they both call the outcome second best, but GP have a harder time accepting this outcome compared to DN. Our interpretation of the results is that due to their different liberal standpoint they identify different problems, causes and solutions. The newspaper's editorial sections argue that there is a new political reality, but they interpret the new reality in a different way.
