The school nurse´s work with identifying mental illness among low and middle school students (English)
Abstract [sv]

Resultat: Analysen resulterade i sex huvudkategorier.

Abstract [en]

Background: Mental illness among children and adolescents is an increasing problem in Sweden. In school healthcare, the school nurse is part of the student health team and is responsible for facilitating medical assessments, health conversation, healthchecks and vaccinations. Health conversations are a big and important task for the school nurse, where they can identify and capture students with mental illness. Aim: To describe the school nurse's experience of identifying and work with mental illness among children and adolescents in the low and middle school. Method: In this study, a qualitative method with inductive approach was chosen in which the data material was analyzed with a qualitative content analysis. Data was collected by means of group interview with six school nurses. Results: The analysis resulted in six main categories. The result showed that the school nurses identified students mental illness through the health interviews with the support of the health surveys and that cooperation with the health team was of great importance. However, cooperation with other healthcare organizations could be improved. Getting the opportunity to attend mental health education to expand their knowledge was an interest of the school nurses as they felt that they did not have the right knowledge and tools to work with health promotion and the prevention with mental illness. Conclusion: The school nurse's work with the health conversation is an important part of the health promotion work to identify mental illness among children and adolescents in the low and middle school. Using the health surveys during the health conversation was the easiest way to identify mental illness. However, the school nurses wanted more knowledge and resources to be able to do their work correctly, safely and in the best interest for the children and adolescents in the low and middle school.
