Elderly patient's experiences of being cared for at home : a literature based study (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: The World Health Organization addresses the development of the world's aging population. The group 60 years and older is estimated to be around 962 million people in 2017. The forecast indicates that that number will increase furthermore. The rapidly increasing life expectancy in conjunction with the decrease in fertility will entail stress and challenges for the health care system, in terms of providing care to maintain the health of the elderly. The need for care for the chronically ill elderly is increasing as people's lifespan increases. Thus, the need to be able to receive care at home also increases. Previous studies show that security for patients is associated with being in their own home.

Aim: Elderly patient's experiences of being cared for at home.

Method: A qualitative literature study was selected to describe elderly patient's experiences of being cared for at home. Friberg (2017) means that qualitative studies contribute to increased understanding of how the individual's experiences, needs and expectations can be met.

Results: The result is presented in 2 main themes. The main theme 1 is safe home care which is divided into 3 subthemes, to be cared for at home, to preserve their autonomy, competence. The main theme 2 is when the care fails which is divided into further 3 more sub-themes, not being able to influence their care, integrity / vulnerability and lack of continuity.

Conclusion: Being treated with respect, being noticed and getting person-centered care and care with the continent were key elements for the elderly patient to maintain health and well-being.
