The nurse's supportive function in meeting patients living with hypertension (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Hypertension is an increasing global health problem which can lead to cardiovascular disease. The role of the nurse's is to support lifestyle changes in order to promote and encourage health activities for patients.

Aim: To describe the nurse's supportive function in the meeting with patients living with hypertension.

Method: An overview of the literature was performed and database searches were made in Cinahl and PsycInfo. Nine articles were included after being analysed, classified and compiled in an article matrix.

Results: The results consist of two main category and four subcategories. The first main categorie was To work health promoting, which describe the nurse's supportive approach regarding introducing lifestyle changes for patients. The second was To have an open approach, which related to the nurse's approach being available and trustful in their relationship with patients. The nurse's supportive approach is important in regards of maintenance of self-care.

Conclusion: The supportive arrangements was changed lifestyle habits through education and counselling. The nurse can support the patient with hypertension to a healthier life. In order to achieve health for patients, it is important that a trusting relationship between the nurse and the patient is established. Through a trusting relationship and availability, the nurse can support the patient based on their individual needs. When the patient is involved in their own care, a trusting relationship can be established. Thus, collaboration between the nurse and the patient may facilitate patient's self-care and health.
