Body image and Instagram : The experience of young women and men (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Instagram is popular with many audiences, especially young women and men where the focus is on sharing videos and photos which can then be confirmed by the likes or comments of other Instagram users.

The purpose of this present study was to shed light on the experience of body image in young women and men using Instagram.

To investigate this, a qualitative study was conducted in which semi-structured interviews were used as a data collection method, in which eight persons participated, of which four women and four men aged 20-30 years. The collected material was analyzed using thematic analysis to find emerging themes.

The results showed that the female participants in the study had a negative view of their body image when compared to other women on Instagram and if the women did not compare to the same extent, their views of their body image could be more positive. The majority of the male participants indicated that they did not experience their body image in a negative direction, however, one of the men experienced that the body image could be adversely affected by Instagram. The results were largely in line with previous research.

One conclusion that could be drawn is that women experienced their body image more negatively in their use of Instagram than men did.
