The close ones' experiences of care at the end of life : A literature-based study (English)
Abstract [en]
Background: Death is an inevitable part of the human condition. But the process of dying differs. In cases where terminal illness is involved, the patient is seldom alone. The close ones are often by the patient's side till the end, contributing in his or hers care. The nurse needs to have some knowledge about how they are experiencing the care for the dying, in order to satisfy their needs and help them through this process.
Aim: The purpose of this study is to describe experiences of being close to an elderly loved one in care at life's end.
Method: This literature-based study was based upon nine qualitative studies.
Results: Three main themes emerged during the analysis. The findings in the respondent's experiences regarding end-of-life care for the elderly loved ones can be summarized in the themes of: A laborious life, Striving for security and The last part of the journey.
Conclusion: There are many difficulties, hardships and dire burdens that lay upon the shoulders of close ones to the elderly patient. Factors that prompt them to contribute in the care and the interaction with care personnel. The nurse should be aware of this and look upon close ones as a part of the care team around the patient, with their own needs and wishes thereby alleviating their suffering as well as the patients.
