The nurse's role in proactive work for the prevention of urinary tract infection (English)
Abstract [en]
Background: Care-related infection is developed by patients in connection with their healthcare. Each year 65,000 patients in Sweden are affected by some kind of healthcare-related infection, of which 14% are urinary tract-related, causing unnecessary suffering.
Aim: The aim of this study is to describe how the nurse can prevent urinary tract-related infection.
Method: The method chosen for this study was a literature review based on 12 articles, seven of which were quantitative and five qualitative. Selected articles were reviewed using review templates, analysed and compiled in the results.
Results: The results show that preventive work in catheterization and proper hygiene management reduce the risk of urinary tract infection. They also reveal that health-related urinary tract infection is reduced through education, increased fluid intake and cranberry capsules/drink.
Conclusion: The result provides nurses with increased understanding of urinary tract infection prevention and promoting patient health.
