A life between different worlds : A qualitative study about growing up with diverse cultures, and its impact on adult identity development (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In the Swedish society people from different nationalities and cultures live together. To grow up, and live with multiple cultures, is something that not everyone gets to experience. Previous research shows that people who grow up with two cultures develop an uncertain self-image during adolescence. There may be confusion about which country or culture to adhere to.

Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the impact that an upbringing of more than one culture may have on adults' identity development.

Seven people were asked to participate in the study, who originate from different parts of the world. Using a qualitative method, interviews were conducted using a semi-structured interview guide and the collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis.

The result showed that ambivalence and confusion around identity were common during adolescence. This developed into self-confidence at adulthood when an increased awareness of the opportunities brought about by growing up with more cultures.
