If we all close our eyes, there is no problem : A literature review about the challenges of school health nurses concerning students who have or who are at risk of getting mental illness (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: school nurses meet students, guardians and other co-actors through their role in student health. School nurses have a unique role in identifying, counteracting and preventing mental illness in students.

Purpose: to describe the challenges faced by school nurses in their work with students who have or are at risk of getting mental illness.

Method: A literature review has been used as a method. Four qualitative studies, published between 2009 - 2019, form the basis of a content analysis presented in four different themes.

Results: The literature review shows that the lack of knowledge of school nurses in the subject of mental illness creates problems both in identifying illness and responding to students. Moreover, the lack of time for school nurses makes it difficult to create relationships and work preventively. In addition, the results show that the collaboration between school nurses and other actors fails, which makes it difficult for school nurses to help students in a satisfactory manner.

Conclusion: School nurses lack resources to identify, respond to and combat mental illness. School nurses are struggling with lack of time and lack of cooperation with co-actors. In conclusion, this prevents school nurses from offering students a person-centered care and preventive measures.
