Palliative care for people with mental illness (English)
Abstract [sv]

Aim: To describe palliative care for people with mental illness.

Method: A literature review was conducted of existing research. Scientific articles was searched for in Cinahl, PsychINFO, PsychArticles and Google Scholar. It became six articles which was chosen to this study and audited according to two review templates from the Department of health sciences at University West.

Result: The result of this study shows that a good relationship and communication between patient and caregiver are important factors to be able to give good palliative care to people with mental illness. It also showed that people with mental illness is at risk of not receiving the proper care during palliative care because the knowledge of caregivers may vary within palliative care.

Conclusion: With or without mental illness, the aim of palliative care is to meet physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs. The caregivers knowledge about mental illness and communication may affect the palliative care given to people with mental illness.
