Youth crime : a qualitative study on identifiable risk factors among young men (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In today's society, youth crime is a common problem. For this reason, the purpose of this study has been to investigate the probation inspector perception of influencing factors in young men's (18-25 years) choice of a criminal lifestyle.

The study was conducted through a qualitative method in the form of a semi-structured interview as a data collection method. In the study, the essay authors have used a target-driven selection and the population that has been chosen for the study in the study are five probation inspectors who work at the Prison and Probation Service in Jönköping. In order for the empirical material to be processed, a qualitative content analysis has been chosen for the study. With the help of the qualitative content analysis, the underlying themes in the analyzed material have been reviewed.

Our study shows that growth factors, social interaction, and school extension have a strong significant role for young men between 18-25 years and their way into crime. Research shows that many young people who choose the criminal path lacks a safe childhood, parents' support and encouragement, which has therefore resulted in the young people having to live sometimes in a dysfunctional home environment. We see that with these risk factors, the young people run a higher risk of getting into crime, however, this does not mean that everyone does it despite the risk factors. A major societal problem today is juvenile crime, which is a frequent problem in social work. Several risk factors emerged regarding crime in the collected empirical data, which highlights how important it is for social workers to know how to deal with these people.
