Mental health after ended elite sports career (English)
Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund: Mellan 10 till 15 procent av alla tidigare elitidrottare upplever psykisk ohälsa efter avslutad karriär. Konsensusbegreppet miljö är en viktig del i vårdvetenskapen. För en före detta elitidrottare är personerna runt om individen en stor del av deras miljö. Familj, vänner, gamla lagkamrater och tränare är exempel på personer som påverkar en gammal elitidrottares miljö och hälsa.

Syfte: Syftet är att beskriva psykisk hälsa hos elitidrottare efter avslutad elitidrottskarriär.

Metod: Metoden som använts är en litteraturöversikt och analysen gjordes enligt Fribergs modell.

Resultat: Resultatet består av två teman, stärkande övergång och personlig uppfattning och fyra subteman, vikten av socialt stöd, planerad avslutning, elitidrottslig identitet och attityd till sin prestation.

Konklusion: En individ med en stödjande familj och umgänge tenderar att i större utsträckning lyckas positivt i sin nya karriär. Ett väl planerat avslut är också en bidragande faktor till före detta elitidrottares psykiska hälsa.

Abstract [en]

Background: Between 10 to 15 percent of all former elite athletes experience mental illness after their career has ended. The consensus concept environment is an important part of healthcare science. For a former elite athlete the persons around the individual are a large part of their environment. Family, friends, old teammates and coaches are examples of people who affect the environment and health of an former elite athlete.

Aim: The aim of the study is to describe mental health in athletes after ending an elite sports career.

Method: The method used was a literature review and the analyze was made from Friberg model.

Result: The result consists of two themes, strengthening transition and personal understanding, and four sub themes, the importance of social support, planned retirement, athletic identity and attitude to their achievement.

Conclusion: A person with a supporting family tend in greater occurrence to succeed positively in their new career. A well-planned ending is also a contributory for former athletes mental health.
